MEN'S BASKETBALL WILLIAM & MARY 89, MAINE 55: Corey Cofield scored 19 points and Calvin Baker added 16 as William & Mary cruised to an 89-55 season-opening victory Friday over Maine in the first round of the W&M Tip-Off Classic. Cofield had 12 points in the first half and Baker sank three of his four 3-pointers in the opening 20 minutes to help the Tribe build a 45-23 lead. The Tribe were 10 of 18 from behind the arc. Ernest Turner led Maine with 20 points. The Black Bears face High Point tonight in the consolation game. WESTFIELD STATE 80, USM 70: Tony Collier scored 17 points and James Ogbunize added 11 points and 17 rebounds to lead Westfield State over Southern Maine in the first game of the Gordon College Tip-Off Tournament in Wenham, Mass. Josh Daniels and Walter Phillips paced the Huskies with 17 points each. BABSON 71, BOWDOIN 57: Greg Bush shot 10 of 11 from the floor, including 3 of 4 on 3-pointers, to score 23 points and lead Babson past Bowdoin during semifinal play in the Irving Oil tournament at Babson Park, Mass. Kyle Petrie scored 19 for Bowdoin, Jac Arbour 15 and Andrew Hippert 10. Babson advances to today's championship game. Bowdoin plays in the consolation. WESLEYAN 68, UNE 63: Matt McManus scored 26 points, including 6 of 8 on 3-pointers, but the University of New England lost to the Cardinals in a mutual opener at Middletown, Conn. Nick Farynaz had 12 points and Mark Oliver finished with 10 for UNE. BATES 65, WILLIAM PATERSON 54: Zak Ray scored 17 points, Bryan Wholey 15, Sean Cahill 14 and Rob Stockwell 12 during the Bobcats' victory over the Pioneers in the first round of the Eastern Tip-Off Tournament in Willimantic, Conn. Bates plays in today's 3 p.m. title game. SMCC 108, UNITY 67: Juan Aroza scored 19 points and Josh Blodgett 15 to lead the Seawolves (3-1) at Unity (0-4). (24) MARYLAND 111, FAIRLEIGH DICKINSON 85: Mike Jones had 22 points off the bench, and Maryland opened the season with a rout of Fairleigh Dickinson (1-2) at College Park, Md. Nik Caner-Medley, the former Deering High star, and Chris McCray had 18 points each. HOCKEY COLBY 4, BABSON 1: Colby scored four unanswered goals, including three in the third period, to open its season with a win at Babson. Joe Rothwell, Joel Covelli, Greg Osborne and Cass Buttafuoco scored for Colby. BOWDOIN 7, UMASS-BOSTON 0: Seven players scored as Bowdoin cruised to a win while outshooting UMass-Boston, 39-8. George Papachristopoulos made eight saves for the win. ST. MICHAEL'S 5, USM 1: Goalie Derek Jackson stopped 35 shots to lead St. Michael's past Southern Maine at Gorham. Mark Carragher scored for USM and goalie David Beckles made 23 saves. BASEBALL MAINE: Five more players signed national letters of intent to play at Maine since Joey Martin of Portland signed earlier this week: Matt Howard of Weston, Mass., Kevin Jackson of Wappingers Falls, N.Y., Myckie Lugbauer of Mahopac, N.Y., Lee Verweel of Toronto, Ontario, and Chris Wojick of Uncasville, Conn.
