Black Bears drop America East opener

MEN'S BASKETBALL

HARTFORD 76, UMAINE 72: Senior Kenny Adeleke had 18 points and three other Hawks scored in double figures as the University of Hartford beat the University of Maine 76-72 in men's basketball on Saturday. Adeleke also had 12 rebounds for his third double-double of the season for the Hawks (3-2, 1-0 America East). Ernest Turner led Maine (1-5, 0-1) with 22 points.

UMASS-DARTMOUTH 61, USM 56: The Corsairs (3-3, 1-0 Little East) overcame an eight-point halftime deficit to get past Southern Maine (2-3, 0-1) at North Dartmouth, Mass.

Josh Daniels scored 23 points to lead USM.

COLBY 78, BROOKLYN COLLEGE 58: Drew Cohen had 19 of his 23 points in the first half as the White Mules (3-2) won to reach the final of the Colby Invitational at Waterville. Colby plays Babson for the title today.

WENTWORTH 83, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 79: Todd Doyle scored 23 points to lead Wentworth Institute of Technology (4-2) over the University of New England (1-3) in a Commonwealth Coast Conference opener Saturday in Biddeford.

Nick Farynaz had 22 points to pace the Nor'easters.

BOWDOIN 65, MAINE MARITIME 55: Andrew Hippert scored 21 points as Bowdoin (6-1) beat Maine Maritime (1-3) at Castine.

VERMONT TC 70, SMCC 50: Clark Agnew scored 13 points to lead Vermont Technical College (6-2) over Southern Maine Community College (3-5) at South Portland.

James Liebowitz scored 14 points for the Seawolves.

ST. JOSEPH'S 77, UMAINE-MACHIAS 64: Marcus Alexander's 23 points led St. Joseph's (2-3) over the University of Maine-Machias (0-5) at Standish.

BATES 81, HUSSON 68: Rob Stockwell scored 17 points and collected 15 rebounds for Bowdoin (4-1) as the Polar Bears won the Paul Bunyan Tournament with a win over host Husson (1-4) at Bangor.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

MICHIGAN 68, MAINE 60: Ta'Shia Walker had 24 points and nine rebounds while Kelly Helvey had 13 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Wolverines (3-4) past the Black Bears (2-3) at Ann Arbor, Mich.

Bracey Barker and Abby Schreder each scored 20 points for Maine.

BATES 81, WORCESTER ST. 57: Meg Coffin had 21 points and 10 rebounds to lift the Bobcats (3-2) in the opening round of the Williams College tournament at Williamstown, Mass.

Bates faces host Williams in the final today.

USM 75, UMASS-DART- MOUTH 50: Ashley Marble had 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead Southern Maine (5-0, 1-0 Little East) past the Corsairs (2-4, 0-1) at North Dartmouth, Mass.

Donna Cowing added 12 points, and Katie Frost 10 points and seven assists for USM.

UNE 61, WENTWORTH 52: Alli Gamache scored 13 of her 17 points in the first half as the Nor'easters (3-1, 1-0 CCC) grabbed a 42-29 lead over the Leopards (2-2, 0-1) at Biddeford.

SMCC 82, VERMONT TC 76: Lindsay Oliver tied the game with a three-point shot at the buzzer for Vermont Technical College (3-1) but Southern Maine Community College (5-1) pulled away in overtime for the win at South Portland.

ST. JOSEPH'S 65, COLLEGE OF ST. JOSEPH'S (Vt.) 42: Brittany Rauscher scored 19 points to lead St. Joseph's (2-3) over Vermont's College of St. Joseph's at Standish.

The Monks took a 32-15 lead by halftime. Rauscher scored her 19 points in just 23 minutes.

EMMANUEL 63, COLBY 58: Alyssa McCoy scored 21 points to help Emmanuel College (3-2) hand Colby (4-1) its first loss of the season in a non-conference game at Boston.

Kate McCabe paced the Mules with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

BOWDOIN 71, RENSSELAER 61: Julia Loonin led the way with 19 points as Bowdoin had five players in double figures in a win at Troy, N.Y.

Eileen Flaherty and Jill Anelauskas followed with 12 each, Justine Pouravelis added 11 and Marissa Berne 10.

WOMEN'S HOCKEY

NORTHEASTERN 4, MAINE 2: Crystal Rochon scored two goals as Northeastern (4-11-1, 3-6-1 Hockey East) rallied to defeat Maine (8-4-3, 1-4-2) at Boston.

After two scoreless periods, the Black Bears took advantage of two early power plays in the third to take the lead with goals by Sonia Corriveau and Kelly Law.

USM 5, CASTLETON ST. 2: Caitlin Tassone had two goals to lead Southern Maine (3-7, 3-3 ECAC) past the Spartans (1-8, 0-7) at Gorham.

Kelly Connors had a goal and two assists, Lauren Pierce added a goal and an assist and Amy McNally added a goal for USM.

MEN'S HOCKEY

BOWDOIN 6, CASTLETON STATE 2: Bowdoin (5-1-0) won its fourth straight game, defeating Castleton State (1-3-1) at Brunswick. The Polar Bears, ranked 11th in the nation, have outscored opponents 26-4 during the streak.

Four goals in a span of eight minutes in the second period gave the Polar Bears control of the game. Matt Smith scored twice while Colin Hughes and Mike Chute also scored.

USM 3, WILLIAMS 3: Chris Sparkes scored two third-period goals to help Southern Maine (1-4-1, 1-3-1 ECAC) tie with the Ephs (4-2-1, 3-0-1) at Williamstown, Mass.

COLBY 7, SKIDMORE 4: Ryan Chrenek had a hat trick in the third period to lead the White Mules (7-0) past the Thoroughbreds (0-5) at Waterville.
