Massabesic edged South Portland for the last spot in the Western Class A football playoffs, and Mt. Blue held off Mt. Ararat for the last playoff position in Eastern Class A according to the final Crabtree point standings released Saturday.
Massabesic and South Portland both finished with 4-4 records, but the Mustangs got the No. 8 seed by virtue of their opponents having one more victory than South Portland´s opponents. Massabesic will visit top-ranked Thornton Academy (8-0) for a quarterfinal game at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Other first-round matchups in Western Class A: No. 7 Sanford (6-2) at No. 2 Windham (7-1), No. 6 Portland (5-3) at No. 3 Bonny Eagle (6-2) and No. 5 Biddeford (6-2) at No. 4 Cheverus (6-2).
EASTERN CLASS A: Mt. Ararat had a chance to claim the final playoff spot with a victory Saturday over Brunswick, but Brunswick´s 20-0 win means Mt. Blue will be the No. 8 seed.
The quarterfinal pairings are: Mt. Blue at No. 1 Bangor (8-0), No. 7 Skowhegan (3-5) at No. 2 Lawrence (7-1), No. 6 Cony (4-4) at No. 3 Brunswick (7-1) and No. 5 Lewiston (6-2) at No. 4 Messalonskee (5-3).
EASTERN CLASS B: Belfast (2-6) earned the last playoff position with its 12-8 victory Saturday over Camden Hills. The Lions will face top-ranked Leavitt (8-0) in the quarterfinals.
Morse (6-2), the defending regional champion, is the No. 2 seed and will host No. 7 Mt. Desert Island (3-5). Gardiner (6-2) won a coin-flip tiebreaker with Hampden Academy (6-2) for the No. 3 seed and will face No. 6 Winslow (3-5), and No. 5 Waterville (5-2) will visit Hampden.
