BRUNSWICK — Alison Walton scored with just 13 seconds remaining in the second overtime as the top-seeded Brunswick girls edged No. 5 Messalonskee 2-1 Saturday in an Eastern Class A girls´ soccer semifinal.

It looked like the teams were destined for penalty kicks before Walton took a pass from Alexa Dearborn at midfield and carried it down the right side.

Teammate Hilary Champagne was charging up the middle as Walton broke toward the net, and Brunswick Coach Martyn Davison said later, "Pat (assistant coach Roche) and I were screaming, ´Pass it to Hilary.´ It seemed like all game we were making the wrong decision -- crossing when we should have shot, and shooting when we should have passed."

Part of the problem for the unbeaten Dragons (16-0) was that after any choice they made, they still had to beat Eagle goalie Sarah Jacques -- and they did that just once, despite a 39-8 advantage in shots.

"I saw that she (Jacques) was protecting the far post," said Walton, "and I was looking to pass the ball to Hilary, but the defender cut off the angle, so I thought I might as well go for it."

That she did, ripping a low shot for the near post. A diving Jacques got a piece of it, but not quite enough.

Messalonskee got on the scoreboard first after a scoreless first half where Brunswick held a 15-2 margin in shots.

The Dragons continued to carry play after intermission, but the Eagles took the lead when an Ali Omsberg corner kick from the right sailed through the crease to Sydney Shackett on the far side, and Shackett converted at 17:30.

Brunswick finally broke through with 13:31 left in regulation as Cassandra Murano passed to Rebekkah Miller cutting to the goal. From point-blank range, Miller drilled a shot off Jacques´ hands and inside the right post for the equalizer.
