SCARBOROUGH Three goals in less than a two-minute span in the second half carried top-ranked Scarborough over fourth-ranked Portland 7-2 in a Western Class A boys´ soccer semifinal Saturday afternoon.
"I thought we came out pretty good the first 10-15 minutes," said Scarborough Coach Mark Diaz. "The wind was a factor; we just wanted to get out of the first half 1-1. When we got the wind in the second half, we got our opportunities and it worked out for us."
"We let a couple of mistakes hurt us and after that, they just got the momentum going," said Portland Coach Rocco Frenzilli.
With the game tied 1-1, Mike Wofford scored on a pass from Austin Downing to give Scarborough (16-0) the lead.
Less than a minute later, Nate Tolman´s direct kick pinballed around in front of the Portland goal before Matt Spencer drove it into the net for a 3-1 lead.
Trevor Hoxsie added another goal seconds later, as he ran onto a loose ball, dribbled deep into the goal area and put a shot into the lower right corner for the first of his two goals.
Portland (10-4-2) did manage to do something that no team has done against Scarborough this year -- score a second goal in a game.
On the heels of Hoxsie´s goal, Fazal Nabi lined up a direct kick from 30 yards and curved it into the top left corner to cut the lead to 4-2.
"If that is a silver lining to this thing, then that´s fine," said Frenzilli. "It´s a little positive to take away. We got here, we came here to compete, play as hard as we could. I think the boys did that."
Scarborough´s Chase Beech opened the scoring in the 19th minute on a rebound of a direct kick from Tolman.
Portland answered when Brett O´Kelly redirected a shot with his head in front of the Scarborough goal.
Scarborough will host Wind-ham in the regional final.
