BRUNSWICK Zach McMillan scored the game´s only goal in the first half, and goalie Peter Morrell made a couple of huge saves in the second half as second-seeded Brunswick held off No. 3 Hampden Academy 1-0 in Eastern Class A boys´ soccer semifinal Saturday.
The game literally game down to the final seconds, as Morrell was called for delay of game with 20 seconds remaining when the official deemed he was taking too long preparing a goal kick.
The official stopped the clock, set the ball in front of the box for an indirect kick, and called for time to resume. The Broncos called for 10 yards of clearance, and Sam Morris waited for the space to be created while the chaotic final seconds ticked down.
With less than 10 seconds left, Morris passed to Corey Grover on the left. Grover shot for the near side, but a diving Morrell made the save as the horn sounded.
"They´d have been better off taking the kick right away rather than asking for the 10 yards," said Brunswick Coach Peter Gardner. "They lost valuable time and let the defense get set; and in that situation, a deflection is the most likely way a goal will be scored."
"I actually had a pretty good view. The wall broke apart, and I saw the opening and where the shot was coming from and was ready for it," said Morrell.
Prior to those last frantic seconds, Hampden´s best opportunity to tie it came 18 minutes into the second half, when Benjamin Clark fed Graham Safford in the middle, and Safford got by his man as he carried to the right side of the crease.
Morrell stayed in the middle, and when Safford drilled a grounder for the far post, Morrell kicked out his right foot just enough to turn it aside.
McMillan´s game-winner came with 5:21 left in the opening half, off a terrific individual effort.
He won a ball along the right side and carried deep into the corner, almost to the goal line, before lifting a perfect shot just over goalie Logan Poirier´s hands and under the far corner of the crossbar.
"I was looking for the cross," McMillan admitted. "It was not fully intended as a shot, but I´ll take it. It got pretty intense at the end, but Peter made a couple of great saves."
Brunswick next plays at top-ranked Bangor (16-0), a 3-0 winner over Erskine Academy.
