CAPE ELIZABETH — So many weapons on offense, and all so good. Cape Elizabeth completed a perfect regular season by doing what it has done all year.

Quarterback Ezra Wolfinger threw three touchdown passes to Finn Melanson, who made highlight-reel catches on all three, and halfback Tom Foden ran for two touchdowns as the Capers overpowered Mountain Valley 34-0 in a Campbell Conference Class B football game before 2,500 fans Friday night at Hannaford Field.

"They big-played us," said Mountain Valley Coach Jim Aylward.

Cape Elizabeth (9-0) gained the top seed for the Western Class B playoffs. The Capers will host No. 4 Wells (6-3), which lost to York, 28-22. Cape won its second game overall against Mountain Valley, matching its win two years ago here.

Wolfinger, Melanson and Foden continued to pile up statistics and light up the scoreboard. Defensively, the Capers were outstanding as they held the Falcons (7-2) to one first down in the first half.

"We came out pumped up," said Wolfinger. "We wanted to prove weīre the best team in Western Class B. In the past, we had trouble starting games. We knew what we wanted to do and we went out and got it."

Said Aylward: "Our goal was to try and contain Tom Foden and I thought we did a pretty good job. Ezra Wolfinger and Finn Melanson beat us. I donīt know how you stop those two guys.

"We played much harder than we did in losing to York last week. I was happy with that."

Wolfinger completed 11 of 14 passes for 209 yards. Melanson caught five passes for 124 yards. He hauled in touchdown passes of 58, 31 and 16 yards, and all involved either running away from defenders, going between them or outjumping them.

Foden finished with 102 yards on 21 carries.

"I think I could close my eyes and throw it and Finn would make the catch," said Wolfinger, who had two interceptions at defensive back.

After holding the Falcons to three plays on the opening series, Cape made a first down on two carries by Foden. Foden then fumbled on a first-down run, Capeīs first and only mistake all game.

Wolfingerīs first interception gave his team the ball at its 40. The Capers scored in nine plays, as Foden went in from the 8. Matt Donovanīs PAT made it 7-0. The key plays on the driver were completions to halfback Kyle Piscopo covering 16 and 17 yards. He caught four passes in the first half for 57 yards.

The Falcons couldnīt move on their next series. Cape struck on first down, as Wolfinger fired a pass down the side to Melanson, who made a leaping catch and then cut back to score, covering 58 yards.

"I knew it would take a couple of scores to put Mountain Valley on their heels," said Cape Elizabeth Coach Aaron Filieo.

With time running out in the half, Foden scored on a 16-yard run. Donovanīs point-after made it 20-0.

Mountain Valley tried an onside kick to start the second half, but Cape recovered. Foden then broke loose on a 23-yard run. After another first down, Wolfinger passed to Melanson, who went between two defenders for the 31-yard score.

Melanson saved his best catch for last. On third-and-goal from the 16, he went over a defender to haul in Wolfingerīs pass and got a foot down in the end zone.

The Falconsī only chance to score came on their first possession of the second half. They banged out four first downs, but halfback Matt Duka was stopped a yard short of the goal line on fourth-and-goal.
