HIGH SCHOOL NOTEBOOK Tigers´ seniors set example
From staff reports Sunday, November 1, 2009

The Biddeford football team returned to the Western Class A playoffs after a one-year absence, losing 21-0 on Saturday at Cheverus. The Tigers finished the season 6-3.

"It´s really a job well done," said Biddeford Coach Scott Descoteaux, who wrapped up his third season as head coach.

"The seniors came in with me and they´ve bought into absolutely everything I´ve asked them to do. What you don´t see from them is how they act in the locker room, how they teach the younger players to treat one another, how they practice, how they go through drills.

"To see this group move on, they´ve made a gigantic impact on this program. The playoff thing, that´s the product of kids doing things the right way."

BRUNSWICK´S OFFENSE accounted for 402 yards in the Dragons´ Eastern Class A quarterfinal win over Cony on Friday night.

Leading the way were center Justin Libby, guards Harrison Kemp and Derrick Darosa, tackles Jacob Pfaff and Alex Tait, and tight ends James Cejka and Ed Bonar.

RYAN NASON, the Bonny Eagle quarterback, has battled a sore ankle since the middle of the season. But during the Scots´ Western Class A quarterfinal against Portland on Saturday, Nason felt his best since early in the season. That was evident as he directed a late drive to give the Scots a 25-19 win and keep their hopes alive for a third straight Class A state title.

Nason scored two touchdowns on 1-yard runs and passed for two touchdowns, including the winning score of 3 yards to tight end Jeff Amell with 28 seconds remaining.

Bonny Eagle fans got a scare when Nason limped off the field after he was stopped on a 2-point conversion rush with Portland leading, 19-18. Nason missed the early part of the winning drive but returned to direct the Scots into the end zone, first throwing to Joe Davis for an 8-yard gain to the 3. One play later, he hit Amell over the middle to complete the comeback.

Now the Scots get another shot at Windham in Saturday´s semifinals. Bonny Eagle lost to Windham 14-0 during the regular season.

Nason played in that game, but wasn´t 100 percent.

"I couldn´t run very well," he said.

THE STANDS at Hannaford Field in Cape Elizabeth hold 1,400. As expected, they were full for Friday night´s game with Mountain Valley.

Cape Elizabeth Athletic Director Jeff Thoreck estimated the crowd at between 2,500 and 2,600, not as large as two years ago, even without stands back then.

The hype for that game was greater than this time.

The fact the Capers were heavily favored, combined with Mountain Valley´s lopsided loss to York the week before, took a lot of the anticipation away from Friday´s game.

The Capers lived up to their top seeding with a 34-0 victory to finish the regular season 9-0.

Cape Elizabeth plays No. 4 Wells in the semifinals of the Western Class B playoffs, and No. 3 Mountain Valley will play at No. 2 York.
