Dragons go inside for a win

By EARL SWINSON, Special to the Press Herald Thursday, February 7, 2013

BRUNSWICK — Blake Gordon scored 19 points and Derek Devereaux added 16 as Brunswick beat Mt. Ararat 63-50 in a Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference schoolboy basketball game Thursday night.

Mt. Ararat took a 7-2 lead, propelled by three takeaways and a 6-3 rebounding advantage, and Brunswick Coach Todd Hanson called a quick timeout.

"I was disappointed," said Hanson. "I thought it being Senior Night and a rivalry game that we´d have more energy. I reminded them we needed to play more inspired because Ararat´s a well-coached team and they came to play."

Brunswick responded. Gordon knocked down a 3-pointer and Alex Bandouveres (10 points) scored on a put-back, then finished off a Devereaux bounce pass for a 9-7 lead.

"I was trying to get the ball to the paint," said Devereaux. "That´s been our biggest issue this year and Coach has had us working on it."

"We´ve been trying to emphasize the paint," agreed Hanson, "and get an inside-out game going. When we get the ball inside, good things happen, but it´s still a work in progress."

Ryan Black followed a Mt. Ararat timeout with a drive and dish to Brad Smith before Shyheim Ulrickson answered for the Eagles with a driving layup.

Smith hit a free throw off an offensive rebound and Devereaux swished a 3 for a 15-9 Brunswick lead at the end of one quarter.

Smith opened the second with a bucket off the offensive boards, and Devereaux nailed another 3-pointer for a 20-9 lead.

"I had been tired from the flu but was feeling good and shooting well," said Devereaux.

Alex LaPierre ended the run with a 3 from the corner off an Ulrickson feed, but Brunswick (10-8) was up 31-19 at halftime.

A pair of 3-pointers from Devereaux and one each from Konnor Scarponi and Black gave the Dragons their largest lead at 47-30 in the third, but a basket from Mason Griffin and five points from Ulrickson closed the gap to 10 points.

Ulrickson had 11 of his 19 points in the third quarter for the Eagles (7-11).

Brunswick led 50-37 in the fourth when the Eagles went on a 9-0 run. Tyler Roberts had five points and a pair of steals, the second ending with an Ulrickson layup to make it 50-46.

But Gordon drove for a bucket and followed with another off a nice Smith pass. Scarponi hit two free throws for a 56-46 margin, and the Dragons closed it out from the line.
