First, the Scarborough boys´ lacrosse team erased a pair of deficits. Then, the Red Storm ended their season in style.

Scarborough scored three unanswered goals in the final six minutes to defeat Brunswick 8-6 for the Class A championship Saturday at Fitzpatrick Stadium.

"The defense played great and we never gave up," said Scarborough´s Ryan Hunt, who scored four goals and helped his team rally from deficits of 4-1 in the first quarter and 6-5 in the fourth.

"We always kept our heads up. Brunswick was a great team and their goalie (Howard Theberge) was incredible. I´ve never seen anyone make some of those saves. But we never gave up."

Chris Kipp´s goal with 5:58 left in regulation tied the game at 6-6 and sparked the Red Storm (13-2), who scored three goals in a span of 59 seconds.

"I just picked up a ground ball and I knew I had to go hard," said Kipp, who was a sophomore on Scarborough´s 2006 state championship team. "My legs were real tired but I just knew that I had to go to the goal hard and shoot low. It worked out."

Kipp´s third goal of the game was followed by Jake Barrett´s go-ahead goal 16 seconds later. Hunt added another goal with 4:59 left.

"The game in itself is a game of ebb and flow," said Brunswick Coach Don Glover, whose team won the 2007 championship. "We knew, regardless of the outcome, it was going to be a game that goes back and forth.

"We didn´t pass the ball particularly well toward the end, and (Scarborough) pressured well and capitalized on situations. It gave them the opportunity to go up by two goals.

"At the end we took some chances and pressured a little bit more, but they were able to move the ball around well enough to keep it away. It was a game of keepaway."

Hunt scored a pair of goals in the final 5:26 of the first half to cut Scarborough´s deficit to 4-3, but Theberge (12 saves) stopped Barrett from close range to preserve Brunswick´s lead at halftime.

Tom Gibson, Wes Caparatto (two goals) and Peter Morrell scored in the first half for the Dragons (13-2).

After Kipp tied it in the third quarter, Brunswick regained a 5-4 lead on Kyle Sullivan´s goal with 14.9 seconds left in the quarter.

Hunt then tied it again less than three minutes into the fourth, but Brunswick took a 6-5 lead on Blaine Cardali´s goal with 8:17 left.

Joe Kennedy made seven saves for Scarborough.

"We´ve been a second-half team all year and we knew what it was like to play from behind," Kipp said. "We just buckled down and said, ´this is the last 24 minutes of the game, you´ve just got to give it your all.´ "
