It gives me the Schills

Well, more bad news befells the Red Sox. According to the Washington Post, "Red Sox ace will miss minimum of two weeks." And we are not talking David Wells here. We're talking bloody-ankle boy Curt Schilling. In fact, it is that very ankle that is giving him trouble.
WPRI reports that Schilling is expected to have a plastic boot fitted.

So now we are down to three starters (Clement, Arroyo and Wakefield). What is this team going to do in May? John Halama will fill Wells hole but what about the other? That part of the rotation may go to Lenny DiNardo, at least until Wade Miller is ready.

The Red Sox knew at the start of the season they would be taking risks with David Wells, Curt Schilling and Wade Miller, but I doubt they expected them all to be unavailable at the same time.

This injury will open the door for yet another player on the roster. I suspect it will be a pitcher but I wouldn't mind Youk come back to the bigs.

I'm not giving up on this team. However, Boston's bullpen better step up over the next month or so for the Sox to survive May.

Reader comments: Does this latest injury spell doom for the Sox?

Put a fork, nay, a ForkLift in 'em. It would take a forklift to get rid of the damaged, corpulent pitching staff. How did Wells get hurt? Actually attempting to field a ball in play (shocker!). How did Schilling get hurt? If you believe the Sox, it is a bone bruise. And Garciaparra had a tendon bruise, I recall. I think people who predicted the Sox to repeat have a cerebral cortex bruise.

I hear there's an open tryout tomorrow morning - invitees...
Rich Garces (over 300lbs)
Frank Castillo
John Burkett
Rod Beck
Ken Ryan
Paxton Crawford
Bobby Howry
Darren Oliver
Danny Darwin
Tony Fossas
Wayne Gomes

They'll be all set in a few days...

The bullpen is about 1000 miles away from stepping up. I'm right back into 2003 pessimism. Must be something in the water.

Red Sox fans, you gotta love 'em...
I heard same things at the all-star break last year...
Same thing about Patriots versus Indy, and Pitt...
Today's date is 4/27

Well, Mario, I must say: the Sox SHOULD be competitive, they should make the playoffs and go at least to the ALCS, given their budget. But they won't. I am not faulting the players' heart, or motivation, or even talent. But it was painfully predictable: over-invest in old, damaged pitchers, and you won't get to October. Sorry. And Foulke was clutch last October, but overall he was not as effective as 4 other closers in the American League last year. That won't get better. That they are a game over .500 at the end of April is particularly bad, because the older arms should be effective early and deteriorate late. For example, you have seen the very best Wells will offer already.

So.

This isn't pessimism, folks, it is realism.

Sox had "old damaged pitchers" last year and won it all(see bloody sock)...Yes we added Wells (41) but sox also added Clement and Miller with Arroyo...
Let's see how long Pedro lasts ptiching 7-8 innings on four days rest.
Once the hot weather gets here, look out.
April showers bring May dingers...

Sorry, Phillipic. They were neither this old, nor this damaged.
I agree on Pedro. If the Sox paid him, he would not be pitching as well (especially w/out with the DH 4 ABs per game in the N.L.) and, in any case, he likely won't last. But Wells was an awful investment, and there isn't enough solidity on the staff to justify the current expectations.
