All aboard...
Maybe it is just how Mercury News' Ann Killion describes it:
"They were protected, momentarily, from the downpour of rain, injuries, errors, late-inning heartbreaks, self-doubts and criticism.""For this one afternoon, all was sunshine and rainbows for the A's."
Yeah, maybe. Or...the A's were fortunate to face the worst starter on Boston's club.
There are plenty of tickets left, but soon fans will be lining up to get on board the "I-don't-like-David-Wells Bandwagon." They'll pretend they always disliked Wells; saying how those two starts were aberrations. That they wanted the team to sign, Scott Kazmir, or someone. It's no wonder, considering yesterday's bleak performance.
Boston.com will break it down for you. (I'm not talking about rocking a beat; I'm talking about getting rocked)
Wells gave up 7 ERs in less than two innings. That's an ERA of, well, large. The math escapes me, but it's around 50. His last two starts combined is near 30.
My guess, he's not quite 100%. I could be wrong.
Perhaps I'm being a little harsh. Why should I be bothered? Oakland is only last in the league in runs scored. Nevermind they scored seven in 1.1 innings, 13 in 8 1/2.
One good thing? Wells didn't walk anyone. Although if he had walked, let's say, the first five batters, perhaps the team would have been better off. Surely, Francona would have taken him out then.
Tony Massarotti of the Boston Herald says that "Wells wasn't worth the rush." Nothing like stating the obvious.
Now I'm left counting the days left on his contract. Perhaps he can be included in the deal for Rocket. He could rejoin former Yankee teammate Andy Pettite. Hmm, that may work. Perhaps Theo should get on the horn and say things like, "No better time to get him," "You know he's going to turn it around" and "He doesn't walk anyone."
Today, the team has a day off before a short homestand. Boston.com's Gordon Edes warns the team not to get too comfortable.
After a less-than-mediocre road trip (2-4), the Yankees winning 10 straight and the Braves coming to town, I would assume Boston's players will not be relaxing.
I won't be....I'll be running around saving seats for friends.

I am one of those guys. One of those guys who says today, "I hated the Wells signing the day it happened." Except, if I recall, I said it to...Ed Walsh. I think what I called Wells was..."Fat". And "Old". And "Injury prone". And when the corpulent wheezer took the mound this spring, we all saw what the Sox are paying for. A fat, old, injury prone and way, way overpaid guy who, in that first prediction I made, will not win more than ten games.
Vinny, I predicted the Sox would dissapoint in April, I continue to do so in May, and we shall see you in October...
