I've got to pull my Sox up
My Sox are falling down. I find myself needing to pull them up much too much lately.
The team looks very vulnerable in this state - exposing an ugly heel.
Heck they are starting to smell.
They do not look themselves. They do not appear relaxed. Even Kevin Millar seems tense.
Losing three straight games to the Toronto Blue Jays is inexcusable.
It's not just Toronto. It's Oakland. It's Seattle. These teams are supposed to be weak and the Sox go 2-7.
Oakland has scored the least of any team. They couldn't even beat Tampa Bay this week.
Toronto has only one star in Vernon Wells; he's hitting a measly .225.
Seattle, well, actually Seattle is a better than the record indicates. With Ichiro, Beltre and Sexson, how bad can you be?
That said the Sox should have been 6-3. Instead missing an opportunity and giving away three series.
What is going on?
Whether it is marital stress or mechanical issues, Keith Foulke isn't himself.
We all know how I feel about David Wells. But apparently, he is cutting ties to New York, or so the Boston Herald reports. His ERA is almost as big as his weight.
Manny, all of a sudden, can't hit lefties, batting .125 against them this year.
Damon wrote himself a ticket out of town when, according to Fox Sports, he called the Sox a "really bad team."
Kevin Millar isn't joking around anymore. His .231 batting average isn't protecting anyone in the lineup. The Boston Herald's Tony Massarotti says he is the "first sign of trouble".
Jay Payton is hitting .220
The bright spots have been Jason Varitek and Trot Nixon. But Nixon hasn't played everyday due to the pitching matchups. One more to add to the list Edgar Renteria, who despite the team's current woes, went 6-12 in Toronto.
It's gotten so bad that the Toronto Sun questions the Champs calling them instead Chumps.
All this before this weekends matchup versus the Yankees.
The New York Post says the Yankees building confidence. Just in time. The Bombers have won 15 of their last 17. Impressive indeed.
Now all the A-Rod and Yankee talk begins. Writers will mention the brawl at least one more time. The term Evil Empire will be tossed about.
Maybe the Red Sox need another altercation to get them started. Even if that doesn't happen, I'm not too worried. If it weren't for Mr. Wells, I would say the Red Sox would sweep the boys in pinstripes.
The Red Sox have also added a couple of players to help in the Bronx. MLB. com reports that John Olerud and Kelly Shoppach got called up.
I was glad to see that the team decided to keep Kevin Youkilis over Jeremi Gonzalez.
Traditionally, Olerud has done well against the Yankees. So I fully expect to see him in the lineup sometime this weekend, if not all weekend.
Should be interesting to see how this all plays out. I'll be watching with garters on.
Reader comments: What should the Red Sox do to right the ship?

Last year at this time the Sox could throw Pedro, Schilling and Lowe. They were at the same time the best hitting team in baseball. This year they have nothing close to that rotation, and much of their punch has withered.
Folks, if they Escape from NY with a single win, we should be happy with it. Right now, the Sox have to play rope-a-dope, stay within 8 games or so by August 1st, and pray for 1. A healthy Schilling, 2. A stud free-agent arm, 3. Manny and Edgar to find their bats; 4. An acknowledgement that it is finally time to regularly play Youkilis and, very sadly, sit Millar, and 5. The bullpen to develop into top late season form as they have the past two years.
Not impossible, but really not very likely. More likely is that by August 15th they are officially on the canvas.
