Eating a little crow

Okay I admit it. David Wells has looked pretty good lately. He is 3-0 in his last four starts, giving up only six runs in 30 innings.

And I'll also admit breaking up his no-hitter. Well, Cincinnati's Ryan Freel has to take some credit too.

My wife had just gotten home from yoga session and wanted an update.

I said "Wells is pitching a no-hitter right now, but now that I said that, Freel will get a hit."

One pitch later Freel did just that.

She looked at me and said "I can't believe you did that."

I replied, "It's okay, I don't like Wells anyway."

The Boston Herald reports that last night, "Wells pays off."

Needless to say he pitched a great, what the Cincinnati Post called a "one hit wonder" with the help of Mike Timlin and Keith Foulke.

The Cincinnati Enquirer asked Rich Aurilla, the Reds third baseman, for his perspective. Aurilla played with Wells in San Diego last year.

Aurilla has a great sense of humor. I love this quote on the Reds official site:
"Once [Wells] did leave [his pitches] out over the middle, we hit him pretty well," Rich Aurilia said. "But we hit them off someone's head in the stands."

Those two walks in the eighth were a bit scary. Considering he only has 6 walks on the year, the Sox will take it.

I still don't like Wells, but I like his recent results.

Meanwhile in the Bronx...
The New York Daily News' Lisa Olson is asking George Steinbrenner to forget the new stadium and concentrate on the present state of the Bombers.

The Boss did however return to his owner's box in time to witness a nice performance from Mike Mussina. The New York Daily News however says the Boss is concerned. He is quoted as saying, "Sure we're concerned." "Until we're in first place, we're concerned."

Looks as though George will be concerned for quite some time. I, on the other hand, won't be concerned as long as the Yankees keep looking up.

Nope...I always thought he was a good sign and we needed a lefty...
We are three games out with no Schilling and no Pedro, and Manny yet to heat up....I'm quite happy with where we are.

No. I've been telling everyone that he would be pitching like this when he got past his injuries. He's old in baseball terms, but if you look at his performance over the past several seasons, he's been a consistent winner with a more than respectable ERA. The guy knows how to pitch!
