Over the course of the season, Ed Walsh will be scouring the Web to bring the latest news, polls, and commentary about the Boston Red Sox to these pages.
Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, both are popular guys on and off the field. Both are on their way to the Hall of Fame. Both are record holders.
And while Manning has had many more offensive options at his disposal, Brady has used more players in his offense. There are no stars on the Patriots, but Brady makes people shine. Marvin Harrison makes Manning shine.
But if it's the intangibles that keep the Pats in the win column, than I will attempt to compare Tom Brady to Peyton Manning without the use of on-field stats.
Both have been highly-sought-after marketing commodities.
Manning has appeared in more commercials, however who has the better commercial?
Tom Brady pushing snickers
Manning's Sprint commercial
Let's face it Brady is a more physical comedian. Vaudevillian even. Seeing someone in sticky situations is much more enjoyable than say watching an egotist.
Advantage: Brady
Let's not kid ourselves, both have a huge on-field resume. Both can teach children a thing or two about the grid iron.
Tips from Brady
Manning tips from his family's football camp
If I were a high school football player, it would be easier to relate to someone who did not have a NFL quarterback for a father. Manning HAD to be a football player; it's in his blood.
Advantage: Brady (perrenial underdog)
There has been a lot of talk about Manning's sense of humor. But as one football writer said, it is a lot easier to be funny for a "highly edited 30 seconds" than say live for 90 minutes on national broadcast television.
Brady killed in this skit on NBC's Saturday Night Live:
Manning has yet to be invited to SNL. Perhaps because he has not one the big one. But don't worry Peyton, the Sports Hippy says it won't be long, well at least for your television invitation.
Advantage: Brady.
A couple of other observations:
Tom Brady never places blame for a loss on anyone else. Play as a team; win as a team; lose as a team. There's no pointing fingers. There's never a show of frustration publicly with the organization nor with his teammates. After losing what many believed to be his best receivers, Brady continued to thrive. Give credit to the system, but Brady is a rock.
Manning on the other hand can be seen on the field berating a receiver for a missed catch; whining at a press conference; blaming the 'D' for a loss; or getting down on a kicker.
Advantage: Brady
So there you have it. Tom Brady is obviously the better QB. He can deliver a better message to the players and the fans. You can't count out the intanglibles. Go Pats!
