What I've been waiting for

Nothing could be sweeter than the best pitchers in the league meeting arguably the best hitters in the league. Now add the fact, that it's Red Sox vs. Yankees - pure honey.

The New York Yankees bring the hottest hitter in baseball to Fenway when they begin a three-game series tonight at 7 p.m. That's right the oft-maligned A-Rod already has 10 home runs and is well on his way to break the MLB record of 14 for the month of April. I hate it, but it adds to the drama.

He has already set the AL record - the quickest player to hit 10 home runs; it has only taken him 14 games. He has also amassed 26 rbis in this short stretch. Pretty impressive, if you like that kind of stuff.

I prefer pitching. Which is exactly why this matchup is going to be very interesting. The Sox will place Schilling, Beckett and Matsuzaka on the mound this weekend. Can you think of a better way to get the 2007 rivalry started? The Red Sox, with their 2.58 ERA, lead the AL in pitching.

Daisuke will get his first taste of the greatest rivalry in sports history. I wonder if anything in Japan is comparable. The Fenz will be electric all weekend, win or lose. The fans will be at their, err, best.

Those three powerhouse starters will go up against Andy Pettitte, Jeff Karstens (gets his first start of the season) and Chase Wright (pitching his second game in the bigs) respectively.

We all know about Andy Pettitte. He's off to a terrific start. But who are these other guys?

In late 2005 when he was pitching with Charleston's Riverdogs, Wright was the subject of a Q & A with PinstripesPlus.com. In the interview he talks about his pitching and compared himself albeit reluctantly to Tim Hudson. He also talked about confidence - something he'll need in Fenway.

In George We Trust, a blog obviously dedicated to the Yankees, offers a 2006 player profile of Karstens. Who they compare to Chien-Ming Wang. Seems fitting enough considering he's taken Wang's place in the rotation. PinstripesPlus.com also has an updated profile, but I honestly didn't feel like paying $80 bucks for the chance to read more about the Yankees.

Fenway's Faithful should put these young guns in their place. The crowd will be the loudest they've encountered. That should surely rattle their confidence.

That said, the Sox rarely do well against pitchers they've never seen, especially when they've been on the road prior to the meeting. There does not appear to be enough time for studying.

But forget the hitting. Forget A-Rod, Jeter and the rest. This weekend it's all about pitching.

The fantasy front and related items:
I made a couple of tweaks to my team's lineup. I mention it only because I have finally gotten myself out of the cellar.

I replaced the injured B.J. Ryan. This move also has some real MLB implications. Without their closer (for six weeks or more), the Blue Jays will undoubtedly struggle (think of last night's outing by Jason Frasor). This can only mean good things for the Sox.

My other moves: Kevin Mench (wrong side of the platoon), Mike Redmond and Adam Kennedy were benched for Micah Owings (who hurt himself in his first outing on my team replacing DL'd Ryan); Josh Hamilton (second in the NL with 5 home runs how this guy can't start everyday is baffling); Carlos Ruiz (better than Redmond?) and Mark I-can-never-spell-your-last-name-correctly Grudzielenik.
I'm still hurting but I'm out of the cellar. Now, if I could get a little more pitching help and say a qualified outfielder, there would be hope. I have little faith.

  • I came across a nice article on the Rotoworld site that gives the results of the best fantasy names. My favorite: Your Momma's Uggla (And she set's your lineup funny)
  • Prediction: Red Sox take two of three from the Yankees, providing a little separation in the standings. Matsuzaka will strikeout 10 and the Red Sox will score more than one run during his outing.
