Sock it to him

It would appear there is a bit of controversy surrounding Curt Schilling's bloody sock during his courageous 2004 World Series outing.

Orioles announcer Gary Thorne suggests that Mirabelli had told him that it was all a publicity stunt. Instead of blood, it was red paint.

Read Boston Globe's article Schilling's sock called into question.

Wow! I'm flabergasted. How could anyone make that accusation? What does one gain. The sock didn't enhance a victory and as long as they won Schilling was going to be a hero.

Mirabelli denies saying anything of the sort.

Perhaps I'm one of the gullible fans of Red Sox Nation, I don't buy the red paint theory.

Schilling appears to be a straight shooter. Perhaps even the most blunt individual in MLB. To think, even if it were true, that he would be apart doesn't make any sense.

Who is this Gary Thorne guy anyway? It turns out he is an Old Town native. In fact, a Bangor Daily News article dated April 13 called him the 'perfect fit' for the Baltimore's airwaves

I wonder what they think now.

It would not surprise me to find the sock in some lab to confirm the blood stain.

I misused the word "infamous" in my initial blog, trying to be cute but it didn't read the way that I wanted it to appear. So for those of you who received the notification and want to rip me for useage, you're too late:)

Unfortunate for Thorne, I say. Mirabelli flatly denies saying anything to Thorne in jest or otherwise and apparently professes to not know Thorne. Thorne's comment was made in an offhand way, but with some certaity in tone. A quick DNA test would end all controversy, and I imagine it would end in Schilling's favor. Not because I'm a Sox fan, but because Schilling IMMEDIATELY suggested the DNA test himself. Either a remarkable bluff or, much more likely, willingness for the truth to be shown. The sock itself has stains that have turned rusty-brown, consistent with blood, not paint, not ketchup. The Hall for the moment suggests that they won't test the sock, that they essentially won't give that much credibility to the rumor because they believe Schilling. But sooner or later (maybe even years later) I bet it happens.

I said "unfortunately" for Thorne because he has (had) a good rep, and he seems like a nice guy. I met him once, briefly, at a Maine Law event where he had come to talk about sportscasting- he didn't have the big ego, he seemed very genuine. A cool guy. I think he threw out the story on air, passing on a rumor, without thinking about it, and then most unfortunately attached Mirabelli to the story to legitimize it after he had uncorked the assertion.
