More from the trip...
Two more bits from recent Fenway trip.
Not sure if this made the television set or not, it never does. But in the eighth inning, out of right field fans were treated with an all-too familiar sight.
A over zealous fan jumped the wall and made his way towards second base.
Now this happens pretty regularly. But what was different about this event was the speed this kid exhibited.
In two seconds he had distanced himself from security some 40 feet. He wss barrelling. Once he neared second he made a head-first slide, both arms stretched out reaching for the bag. "Safe!"
He then popped up to greeted by a guard coming from third base. Made a juke, but the guard as if in a rodeo grabbed the runner's arm, twirled him and dropped him with a tackle.
It was over almost as fast as it happened.
I don't condone it, but I was struck at the kid's speed. I even yelled out, "Sign him up."
He could be the next great pinch runner; the first being David Roberts, of course.
Instead of chiding the young speedster, Fenway's faithful cheered. You could hear fans trying to convince their friends to follow suit.
"I've got your bail and I'll give you $200."
"Come on you're faster than that guy."
All worth a good laugh.
I wonder if it was worth it? The runner certainly has one hell of a story.
After the game as we walked searching for the limo, we stood next to the players' parking lot. There we got a glimpse of Coco's bronze hummer and what appeared to be a new toy for Big Papi.
Ortiz carefully and slowly backed his new, bright yellow Lamborghini from the garage. Once he got it safely into the road, he was off. The unique sound of the engine could be heard for miles.
Last time I was witness to one of his exits he was sporting a hummer similar to Coco's that blasted a rap beat. This time, no music.
I was surprised that he was able to fit in such a compact race car, but he didn't look the least bit out of place. I guess a Lamborghini will do that.
