TODAY'S GAME
WHO: Worcester Sharks at Portland Pirates
WHEN: 4:05 p.m.
WHERE: Cumberland County Civic Center
Hartford Coach Jim Schoenfeld wore a big smile on his face.
"We bring out the best in each other," Schoenfeld yelled to Portland Pirates Coach Kevin Dineen before he left the Cumberland County Civic Center Saturday night. "That was a great game."
"He got his two points," Dineen muttered.
The Wolf Pack pulled out a 2-1 win against the Pirates in a shootout before a crowd of 6,098 for their fourth win in five games against Portland this season.
Nigel Dawes and Jarkko Immonen each put in goals as Hartford raised its record to 4-0 in shootouts.
Only Zenon Konopka scored a goal during the shootout for the Pirates, 3-5 on the season in such games.
"Everything is hard for us, right now," Dineen said. "It's nothing but work."
Portland managed to salvage one point in the standings after Tim Brent lifted his eighth goal of the season with 48 seconds left in the third period to forge a 1-1 tie.
"Obviously, we're in a scoring crunch to a certain extent, and we had to work our tail off to get our one goal tonight," Dineen said. "We just got to keep the faith that something is going to pop for us."
The Portland goal came on the power play after the Pirates pulled goalie Dov Grumet-Morris in favor of a sixth skater.
"There's nothing more that you can ask for than the effort you got tonight," Dineen said. "There's some little things that are going on with our game right now that we feel are fixable, which is a good thing."
The Pirates have had an especially difficult time scoring against the Wolf Pack. Brent's goal snapped a scoreless string of 205 minutes, 45 seconds, extending back to a Nov. 4 game in Hartford.
"Portland is a competitive, physical grinding team and, to our credit, we matched them stride for stride in that department," Hartford assistant coach Ken Gernander said.
The Wolf Pack opened the scoring 1:25 into the second period when Dane Byers poked in the rebound from the slot after Grumet-Morris stopped Ryan Callahan's close-in shot from the left side four seconds after the Pirates had finished killing off a penalty.
Grumet-Morris, making his first start since his second call-up of the season from the Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL, made one sensational save after another to keep the Pirates in the game.
Grumet-Morris, making his fifth start of the season, made 38 saves. Al Montoya had 30 saves for the Wolf Pack.
