What is it like?

I'm sure many people wonder, what it is like going from a player to a coach? I was always curious why players would get right into coaching. For me, it was the right fit for the family, staying in Maine and the opportunity was too good to pass on. And you know, I really enjoy it. What is not to love so far? We are almost one month into the season and we haven't lost in regulation. But that is not the most rewarding part of coaching. For me, watching guys execute what you and the coaches devise before and during the game and having success with it far outways the wins and losses. The bottom line in pro sports is about the W's, though, so in that respect I got no grace period. The coaches and players are expected to get results immediately. As a player, I really took pride in sticking to the game plan my coaches laid out, so as a coach, this is what drives my ambition in helping these guys make it to the next level...

After the game last night, Bruce Crowder, our other assistant, played for my buddy's men's league team. I was asked to join them but the desire to play is just not there at this point... The funny thing about the teams early success is I was getting ribbed by the management about my pre-season record and they were blaming me for the losses. Does that mean I will get some credit for the streak?... To be totally honest, our job has not been all that tough behind the bench this far. The real test will be when we face some adversity. When your team is performing well, you look like a genius. One of my old teammates used the old term, "It's all hugs and kisses when you win". And he was exactly right. Coming to the rink after a big weekend like we had makes everything great. Even for coaches. Let's hope this trend continues.Another happy day at the office, Weino

Eric:
Welcome home~! First, I have enjoyed watching your play as a hockey player coming up through UMO, and later through the NHL. I think its great you were able to enjoy a career as long as you did regardless of your numbers, and now come back home to share your knowledge and experience with players who have the same hopes and dreams that you were able to achieve. Good luck to you!
