Jackson Gets Start in Place of Masterson
With Justin Masterson being summoned to Boston to make spot start for the Red Sox this afternoon against the Angels, the Sea Dogs will turn to right-handed pitcher Kyle Jackson to start tonight at Hadlock Field against the Binghamton Mets.
Jackson didn’t allow a run during his first three appearances, working 4 and 2/3 scoreless innings…Last 4 appearances: 1-0, 7.71 ERA (7.0 IP/6 ER)…Tonight is his first career start in Double-A and the 42nd of his career – his last appearance
as a starter came on June 9, 2005 at Hickory (pitching with the Greenville
Drive).
Masterson is 1-0 with a 0.95 ERA in four starts with the SeaDogs this season. He has the Eastern League’s 3rd lowest ERA and ranks 4th with 23 strikeouts. The righthander has allowed a run in just one of his four starts. He was selected the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for opening week of the 2008 season. He is the fourth ranked prospect in the Red Sox organization, according to Baseball America. Masterson becomes the first player from the Red Sox’ 2006 First Year Player Draft class to advance to the major leagues. He is 16-9 in 45 games in his three minor league seasons.
He is the 155th Sea Dog to appear in the Major Leagues. He is one of ten former Sea Dogs currently with the Boston Red Sox.
Masterson tossed 94 pitches and lasted six innings in his Major League debut. He allowed one run on two hits, walking four and striking out four. He did not factor into the decision.
Filling the roster spot left open by Masterson is outfileder Mikey Hall. Hall joins the Sea Dogs from Single-A Lancaster. Hall, 22 years-old, has appeared in 12 games for the Lancaster JetHawks hitting .216 with one home run and two RBI. Last season he set a career high hitting .285 in time split between Single-A Greenville and Single-A Lancaster. He hit safely in the final 18 games of the regular season raising his average to .301 in 82 games with Lancaster. Hall was selected by the Red Sox in the second round (54th overall) of the June 2003 draft.
